Give a Hand for Tommy

“A Hand for Tommy”

Why we are doing this:

Tommy Hand has been forced to stop work because he has lung cancer – after a merry-go-round of doctors, specialists and scans he is now on a regime of specialised physio, medication and breathing exercises to assist clear up his shortness of breath and an application to have “asbestosis” recognised, as the cause, is underway.

After gaining his bronze medallion in 1962 at Dee Why SLSC where his efforts saw him awarder Life Membership, he has helped out many clubs when they needed a surfboat sweep, coach or mentor including Bilgola and Queenscliff.  Tommy joined Queenscliff SLSC in 1987 and, after moving between Dee Why and Queenscliff as crews came and went, he was awards Distinguished Service award by Queenscliff in 2009.

Tommy excelled as a coach, teacher and mentor of young rowers.  He competed with crews up to the 2016 season, having won medals at all levels of the sport.  As a clubman he has very few equals.  Boats and boat shed equipment remain in as-new condition through the work that Tommy does all year round. One of his greatest triumphs was re-building a decrepit surfboat from Bateman’s Bay into a sleek craft that the Queenscliff SLSC Women’s Open crew rowed with pride in the 100 years Anzac commemoration at Gallipoli.

Tom’s very recent health news has stunned everyone and the encouragement to convene a benefit event has been overwhelming because so many want to give “a hand to Tommy” – to give a bit back.
