Skills Maintenance is required every season for certain award/certificate holders:
- Bronze Medallion
- Surf Rescue Certificate
- Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue
- Gold Medallion
- Advanced Resuscitation Techniques
- IRB Crew
- Silver Medallion IRB Driver
- Rescue Water Craft Operator
- Age Manager
In order to patrol, operate rescue craft or compete in SLS competitions in the current season, Skills Maintenance must be completed by the 31st December – so please do your proficiency at the earliest available date.
Members are required to complete the Skills Maintenance theory component online for the following awards, via the SLS Hub eLearning application, then click on Training Library and select “Skills Maintenance” and then click “Enrol” for each relevant award:
- Bronze Medallion
- SRC
- Advanced Resuscitation Techniques
- IRB Crew and IRB Driver
- Age Manager
Additionally, all Patrolling members aged 18+ are required to complete the SLS Child Safe Awareness Course, located in the Safety and Wellbeing tab of the Training Library.
The relevant online theory modules must be completed prior to undertaking any practical proficiency.
The BM/SRC practical elements of signals and run/swim/rescue should be undertaken with your Patrol Captain on patrol. (The run/swim/rescue can also be undertaken at the Sunday Club Swim at 11am).
Run-Swim-Rescue (timed)
100m Run – 100m Swim in 3:30 minutes or less
- The run distance to be taken from waist deep water, e.g., the run is from a flag, around a
marker and to waist deep water. The swim component is to a marker 100m from waist deep
water. - The swim leg is conducted with a rescue tube attached to the rescuer. The use of fins is
optional and permitted. - Patients will be waiting in the water in line with the 100m marker. Rescuer secures the
conscious patient with the tube. The timed component of the Run-Swim-Rescue finishes at
this point. - Rescuer swims 100m to return to the beach with the patient.
- Rescuer assists the patient to the water’s edge.
Signals
Demonstrate knowledge of signals. The demonstration must include the following:
- Beach to water signals
- Water to beach signals
BM/SRC/ART Lifesaving CPR practicals with a Club trainer are provided upstairs in the Clubhouse on dates as advised.
IRB Crew and IRB Driver Skills Maintenance will be organised by the Club, with dates circulated by email to award holders.

Demonstrate effective and safe crewing practice and ability including:
- Crewing positions
– Rise Crewing Position
– Standing Crewing Position
– Lock-in Position

- Awareness of Powercraft Code of Conduct.
Silver Medallion IRB Driver (SMIRBD)
Demonstrate the ability to apply safe driving practice including but not limited to:
• 1 o’clock wave negotiation
• Parallel running
• Awareness of Powercraft Code of Conduct.
Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue, Gold Medallion and Rescue Water Craft Operator Skills Maintenance is provided by Branch at an appropriate time to be advised.
